Ageing in a Foreign Land and Greek Research conferences

Starting at Flinders at Tonsley tomorrow, the 3rd biennial Ageing in a Foreign Land conference will present research into the experiences of the ageing populations from various migrant backgrounds in Australia, including people of the Chinese, African, Greek and Italian ethnic communities.

The conference, to be opened by SA Minister for Multicultural Affairs and Ageing Zoe Bettison, runs from 24 to 26 June and will see 60 papers presented and includes a panel discussion. More than 130 delegates are registered.

As well as looking at ways to improve the competencies and skills of service providers and professionals who deal with older people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds, researchers will present on issues that include elder abuse, falls prevention, homelessness, intergenerational interaction, spirituality and ageing well.

Professor Michael Tsianikas of the LOGOS Australian Centre for Hellenic Language and Culture at Flinders is convenor for both Ageing in a Foreign Land and for the 11th International Conference on Greek Research on the 26 and 27 June, which will also be held at Tonsley.

Nearly 50 papers will be presented at the Greek research conference, covering topics that range from Greece’s current economic crisis to the incorporation of Greek mythology into computer games, to a case of philosophically induced hiccups.
