Building Engineering links with Singapore

NCP photoFlinders students have enjoyed five-month Work Integrated Learning (WIL) placements within the Biomedical Engineering & Materials Group of Nanyang Polytechnic in Singapore thanks to the New Colombo Plan.

Engineering students Bethany Kamitakahara, Michelle Pham-Nguyen and Alessandro Pirri were the first NCP-funded group to go to NYP, with others to follow in 2017 and 2018.

Their projects included working on the development of an in-ear seizure monitoring device for epilepsy, blood flow signal analysis and processing for the purposes of haemodialysis; and the development of a novel pill crusher to assist patients fed via a nasogastric tube.

WIL placements are a compulsory requirement of all engineering degrees in Australia and provide a way for students to put into practice their learnings from the classroom.

The Flinders University approach is to immerse students in a 20-week engineering program (rather than the required 12 weeks) as it gives them the opportunity to work on a project (or projects) of greater significance given the longer time spent with their host institution.

The Singapore placement students had a fantastic experience, both personally and professionally.

Their engineering work provided a great opportunity to work with different project stakeholders, particularly healthcare professionals with an interest in the projects outcome, while outside the lab they were given the opportunity to explore Singapore, and experience living in another country and culture for an extended period.

Flinders funding under the Government’s New Colombo Plan will see around 190 Flinders University students take part in mobility projects across the Indo-Pacific throughout 2017.
