Meet Mahoshadi, your Flinders Business ambassador

Flinders Business Mahoshadi

Meet Mahoshadi De Silva, a Flinders University student studying the Master of Business (International Business) with Flinders Business.

Originally from Sri Lanka, Mahoshadi chose to study at Flinders University because of its strong reputation, affordable fees, and the scholarship she was awarded to support her while studying. She knew she wanted to study in Australia but needed to choose a university and course that aligned with her career goals.

Graduate work-ready

The Master of Business (International Business) is designed to prepare future managers for positions of responsibility in international organisations. The degree emphasises international business strategy, management, marketing, and finance. It frames contemporary business issues in a global context, which excited Mahoshadi. “With globalisation and the rapid integration of world economies, a businessperson needs to develop a global mindset in order to connect and operate effectively with diverse markets, people, cultures, and information across countries.”

Mahoshadi has a passion for international business. “Understanding global issues and preparing for diverse business opportunities around the world excites me,” she says. “I love diversity, integrating and sharing knowledge with people from different cultures and backgrounds, and working with international companies to help solve business issues and exploit opportunities.”

Tailored work experience

Throughout her course, Mahoshadi has had access to a range of projects which have helped her understand international business and leadership principles. The Flinders University Work Experience Program has provided her with work experience while studying. The program gives the business community access to enthusiastic volunteers preparing for their careers.

“I am planning to undertake an internship and consulting project this semester. I’ll have the opportunity to put what I have learnt in the classroom into practice. It will be great to understand how a real company works,” she says.

It’s no wonder that Flinders Business is No. 1 in Australia in Business & Management for overall experience The Good Universities Guide 2020 – overall quality of educational experience (postgraduate)

Inspirational teachers

Mahoshadi thinks Dr Ezaz Ahmed, the former MBA director at Flinders University and her teacher for the subject ‘Managing People’, is the most influential person she has met at Flinders Business. “He was an inspirational character who made learning not just a one-off thing – where you study to pass an exam – but a lesson in self-exploration.”

While studying in Australia Mahoshadi is also freelancing as an artist and fashion designer. She plans to combine her international business education with her love of fashion. “I’ve kick-started my career in the fashion retail industry to gain experience, and I plan to launch my own fashion startup,” she says.

Living in Adelaide

The Flinders University Sri Lanka Student Association has been a great way for Mahoshadi to build friendships in Adelaide. But there are lots of different clubs and societies students can join to meet and engage with students from a wide range of background. From sports clubs to vegetarian food clubs, volunteer groups – students are sure to find something that interests them.

Mahoshadi’s advice to people considering studying in Australia is to choose an institution that will provide you a holistic student experience. “Flinders Business provides a learning experience which goes far beyond theory,” she says. “Industry placements and projects give students hands-on knowledge and insights of the real business world. Studying at Flinders is a truly international experience with the diversity of lecturers and students I get to interact with each day. Not only has the Master of Business helped me move up in my career but also help me create lifelong friendships.”
