Researchers at the Flinders Centre for NanoScale Science and Technology (FCNST) have recently begun a Researcher in Business collaboration with PMB Defence. Following on from a successful NanoConnect technology review and feasibility study completed in 2012, the new 12 month project sees postdoctoral researchers from Flinders work closely with PMB Defence in the improvement of large-scale rechargeable lead-acid batteries.

PMB Defence supplies, installs and maintains the Main Storage Battery used in the COLLINS class submarines. The collaboration with FCNST consists of two research topics, led by Dr. Cameron Shearer and Dr. Daniel Tune, aimed at improving the lifetime and reducing the maintenance requirements of the company’s core defence product. With world-leading expertise in advanced nanomaterials and surface science, Flinders researchers are using the latest cutting-edge techniques to develop practical solutions to long-standing challenges which are also readily deployable in the short term.
