Changes related to statistical software provided by the university
Posted on: June 22nd, 2009 by Pawel SkuzaTwo changes related to statistical software provided by the university, are worth reporting:
(1) SPSS Inc decided to change their product name from SPSS to Predictive Analytics Software (PASW). Although, resigning from the one of most recognisable labels in statistical software has been greeted by many users and statisticians with mixed opinions, the software has been officially labelled PASW (starting from ver 17.0.2).
This change makes no difference to university licencing agreements with SPSS Inc, the way the software can be used, neither requires updating of previously obtained versions of SPSS. More than likely, the old label will be widely used for some time by users and researchers worldwide. Double naming PASW (SPSS) will be used on university websites and implemented in consequent updates of relevant websites.
More information is available on the SPSS website.
(2) In addition to using PASW (SPSS), which is installed in university labs and computer rooms while on campus, for many years the University has been purchasing a limited number of copies of PASW (SPSS) Graduate Packs for distribution to postgraduate students for at-home use. PhD, Doctorate, Masters by Research, Masters by Coursework and Honours students are all eligible to apply for a pack.
However, given that the degrees mentioned above differ in duration and size of their research components, from now on two types of Grad Packs will be issued. For Masters by Coursework and Honours degrees with smaller research projects, the software allocated will have a licence valid for one year from the date of installation. Students undertaking a PhD, Doctorate or Masters by Research are entitled to obtain SPSS with a licence valid for four years.
More information about various options of obtaining PASW (SPSS) for postgraduate student and staff can be found on this page on Flinders University website.
