Office of Research - The “ORB”

The NHMRC have announced the opening of the Projects Grants 2010 round for funding in 2011.

Key dates: 

  • Round opened: Tuesday 8 December 2009
  • Round closes: Wednesday 17 March 2010
  • Office of Research deadline for review: Wednesday24 February 2010

Please be aware that this round will be very different from previous rounds because this round will be submitted using the new Research Grant Management System (RGMS). Please note that the RGMS has been unavailable due to enhancements being made and tested in relation to ’self-registration’ and the Project Grant online application will not be available until 17 December 2009.

While waiting to access the RGMS, please note that the Project Grant Funding Policy is available on the NHMRC website. Please take the time to read this, and related documentation given on the site, very thoroughly.

In particular note page 1 of the Project Grant Funding Policy lists the significant changes for the 2010 application round and gives the section references for these changes.  The changes have been made to:

  • New Investigator Eligibility Criteria;
  • Special Research Areas;
  • Large Scale Clinical Trial applications;
  • Funding by other organisations;
  • RGMS procedure to submit an application;
  • An Indigenous Grant Review Panel has been introduced;
  • Process to expedite the assessment of less competitive applications;
  • Modifications to Funding Policy and Advice to Applicant documentation;
  • Formatting requirements for the pdf attachment.

Special Research Areas 2010 are:

  • NHMRC’s Priority Research Area : Indigenous Health
  • Strategic Plan Initiative Areas:
    • Complementary and Alternative Medicines;
    • Effective Health Care: Comparative effectiveness research;
    • Effective Health  Care: Mental illness - Services for severe and persistant mental illness;
    • Global Health - Health issues in our region;
    • Nanotechnology and health;
    • Obesity - Intervention;
    • Water Quality and Health
  • Special Initiatives for 2010:
    • Asbestos related diseases;
    • Dementia research;
    • Electromagnetic fields;
    • Health challenges of climate change.
