Oscar Wight, Physiotherapist. Class of 2020

Oscar Wight Physiotherapist

Current role and responsibility

I currently work across two roles: Physiotherapist (musculoskeletal) in private practice and  as a physiotherapist in amateur league AFL.

What do you like most about what you do?

Helping people through their rehab journey is a very rewarding experience. Often we meet patients when they are at physical lows and in a lot of discomfort. Getting people back to full function and seeing the change from where they’ve come from is very enjoyable to be a part of.

I particularly enjoy treating sporting injuries. Having played sport all of my life, I’ve experienced a lot of injuries myself, so you can relate the situations your patients are in.

What is the achievement you are most proud of?

Considering my studies at Flinders finished within the last 2 years, I’m proud that I’ve been able to establish myself as a practitioner and build a client list within that short period of time.

What Flinders experience has had a lasting impact on you?

The clinical placements throughout my time at Flinders were all memorable. I was lucky enough to complete placements at the Lyell McEwin, Women’s and Children’s, Royal Adelaide, Modbury and Riverland General hospitals.

However, my experience at the Health2Go clinic on Flinders’ Sturt campus probably had the biggest impact on me professionally. It really solidified that I wanted to pursue musculoskeletal or the private practice side of physiotherapy.

What advice do you have for your younger self?

Take the time to do additional placements or observations so you can get a glimpse into as many areas of your future career as possible. Once you finish your studies, it is important to still continue to learn and grow your clinical knowledge.
