These difficulties can result in reduced physical function, disrupted sleep, nutritional concerns, and changes in cognition.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Exercise is increasingly becoming recognised as a powerful intervention for people living with and recovering from cancer. Australia is at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/journals\/oncology\/articles\/10.3389\/fonc.2023.1095852\/full\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">forefront of research<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> into understanding how exercise positively impacts people living with and beyond cancer. Evidence<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">shows significant improvements in physical function, cancer-related fatigue and overall quality of life.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In response, a team of experts from Flinders University, including Dr Matthew Wallen, Dr Holly Evans, Mr Nathan Chesterfield, Dr Joyce Ramos, and Professor Claire Drummond, have introduced the &#8216;Cancer Exercise and Physical Activity Service,&#8217; a new student-led initiative. This service draws from the extensive clinical experience and research conducted by Dr Evans and Dr Wallen. Dr Evans&#8217; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2072-6694\/13\/23\/5925\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">research<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> investigated the use of digital methods to assist men with metastatic cancer in sticking to exercise routines, while Dr Wallen\u2019s research in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/29555526\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">measuring physical capacity before cancer treatment<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and the use of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/32469144\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">exercise to enhance individuals&#8217; physical state before treatment<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">; a practice known as &#8216;prehabilitation\u2019.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1010\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1010\" style=\"width: 265px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1010\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/caring-futures-institute\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/95\/2023\/08\/Dr-Wallen.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"265\" height=\"248\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1010\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr Matthew Wallen<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;It was identified that student-led exercise services could be a key facilitator of improving engagement for people living with and beyond cancer,&#8221; Dr Matt Wallen explained.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Cancer Exercise and Physical Activity Service adopts a new approach to meet the increasing need for cost-effective and accessible services to support patients during and after treatment. Hosted at Flinders University, this 12-week exercise program offers group-based sessions through Flinders\u2019 Health2Go service and provides individualised home-based exercise programs that clients can complete throughout the week.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">At the same time as the initiative delivers evidence-based exercise interventions to improve cancer patients&#8217; health and wellbeing, it also serves as a learning platform for 5th-year postgraduate Clinical Exercise Physiology students. These students gain a unique opportunity to learn directly from highly skilled healthcare professionals in a clinical environment.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Designed as the first step toward a new care framework for exercise-related oncology services, the &#8216;Cancer Exercise and Physical Activity Service&#8217; aims to shift from conventional hospital-based settings to community-centred care, encouraging self-management.
