{"id":1383,"date":"2025-11-04T11:01:40","date_gmt":"2025-11-04T00:31:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/caring-futures-institute\/?p=1383"},"modified":"2026-02-03T10:59:28","modified_gmt":"2026-02-03T00:29:28","slug":"employment-connections-that-best-suit-people-with-disability","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/caring-futures-institute\/2025\/11\/04\/employment-connections-that-best-suit-people-with-disability\/","title":{"rendered":"Employment connections that best suit people with disability"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">To ensure more inclusive employment for people with disability, a new national <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dss.gov.au\/disability-employment-reforms\/development-centre-inclusive-employment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Centre for Inclusive Employment<\/a> has been created to improve service and support for people with disability aiming to forge a career rather than just obtain a job.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Flinders University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/researchnow.flinders.edu.au\/en\/persons\/june-alexander-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr June Alexander<\/a>, who has worked for 30 years in the field of employment support for people with intellectual disability, describes this initiative as a \u201conce in a lifetime opportunity to address gaps and issues that have persisted in the system\u201d.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1384\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1384\" style=\"width: 137px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1384\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/caring-futures-institute\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/95\/2025\/10\/dr-june-alexander.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"137\" height=\"167\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1384\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr June Alexander<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Centre for Inclusive Employment commenced in March 2025, established through the $22.1 million Government grant awarded to provide resources, tools and training that will help providers deliver quality employment services and supports.<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This presents an opportunity to redress and refashion previous systems that had struggled with ongoing issues and problems to find appropriate and fulfilling employment for people with disability.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Dr Alexander is part of a College of Experts for the Centre, which is led by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swinburne.edu.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Swinburne University of Technology<\/a> in partnership with a consortium that includes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inclusionaustralia.org.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Inclusion Australia<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/family-advocacy.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Family Advocacy<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/disabilityemployment.org.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Disability Employment Australia<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/nds.org.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Disability Services<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unimelb.edu.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of Melbourne<\/a>. The benefits of such a diverse network of organisations and experts will ensure cohesive and comprehensive research outcomes.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThe new centre represents an important step forward, because Australian research in this area of disability employment support is quite small, but the community works well together and through this cohesive strength we get good results,\u201d says Dr Alexander.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Dr Alexander\u2019s current work for the centre includes reviewing employment outcomes for people with intellectual disability, to learn what needs to be in place for their employment to be successful.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In November, Dr Alexander will attend a disability employment conference in London and undertake a study tour to explore international approaches \u2013 especially to focus on Customised Employment \u2013 and identify insights that can inform and strengthen practice in Australia.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWhile Customised Employment has been in place for a long time, its definition is not so widely understood in Australia. It has been very successful in the United States where it is now a legislated four-stage process that can find specific appropriate employment for a person with disability. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIn Australia, it tends to be that support is provided to help someone with disability apply for an advertised job. However, Customised Employment looks at the disability and skill set of the person, focusing on their strengths and interests, and then working with them to find appropriate employers and follow-up training, to ensure they can succeed in their employed work.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIt\u2019s a detailed process that takes longer than how we have previously tried to find work for people with disability, but the success of this system has been extremely high, especially for people with higher support needs. It means that people who would probably not get employed can find jobs where they are valued and that they really enjoy.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThrough this system, the people who receive Customised Employment are much more likely to have long-term employment, because the job fits them correctly. Too often, we see that someone with disability loses a job or leaves a job within the first 12 months, because it isn\u2019t a suitable job match. The Customised Employment system changes this entirely, because it looks to provide them with a long-term career.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">She says one of the aims of the Centre for Inclusive Employment is to promote Customised Employment more widely among Australian employers and organisations, so they use it more frequently and implement it with confidence.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Dr Alexander will also be designing micro-credentials that will be provided through Flinders University, aimed at building the capability of disability employment staff.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cImportantly, the Centre integrates the voices of people with lived experience of disability, ensuring that its work is grounded in real-world needs and perspectives. This co-designed research approach will bring everyone in this field together, to introduce changes that benefit everyone.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This work is vital because it improves employment outcomes for people with disability by equipping service providers with best-practice resources, training and evidence-based models.
