The Caring Futures Institute is calling for\u00a0<\/span>informal and professional\u00a0<\/span>carers<\/span>\u00a0of people living with dementia<\/span>\u00a0to help test a new online dementia education and skill training program for carers.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A project team led by Professor Lily Xiao at the Caring Futures Institute is working with stakeholders to adapt the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>World Health Organization\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>iSupport<\/span>\u00a0for Dementia<\/span><\/a>\u00a0in an Australian socio-cultural context<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Professor Xiao said it\u2019s essential that the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Australian version of\u00a0<\/span>iS<\/span>u<\/span>pport<\/span><\/a>\u00a0works in practice for carers<\/span>, and including consumers in the project from the beginning was the best way to do this<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>In phase one of our project, we\u00a0<\/span>conducted focus groups with informal carers and staff<\/span>\u00a0who provide<\/span>\u00a0dementia and community aged care services to people with dementia<\/span>,\u201d Professor Xiao said.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cUsing the results from phase one, the team made modifications to the World Health Organization\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>iSupport<\/span>\u00a0for Dementia materials, including creation of a new module entitled \u2018My engagement in consumer directed care\u2019.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This module aims to prepare carers to actively participate in the development of care plans for people with dementia and drive the quality of consumer-directed services, an aspect of the\u00a0<\/span>Aged Care Quality Standards<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and the standard identified in the\u00a0<\/span>2019 Dementia Australia Communique<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The program incorporates p<\/span>erson-centred care principles and<\/span>\u00a0interactive learning using<\/span>\u00a0scenarios<\/span>. It<\/span>\u00a0also links to current available resources and services for people with dementia and their\u00a0<\/span>carers<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In phase two, the project team developed a\u00a0<\/span>testing website<\/span><\/a>\u00a0that includes two learning modules<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>to test the feasibility of online self-learning and carer support groups and to gain feedback from stakeholders.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Professor Xiao said f<\/span>eedback<\/span>\u00a0from stakeholders<\/span>\u00a0in the pilot<\/span>\u00a0indicated<\/span>\u00a0that the\u00a0<\/span>iSupport<\/span>\u00a0wa<\/span>s an ideal learning tool to bring family members together to learn and help each other.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>For example, participants suggested that the\u00a0<\/span>iSupport<\/span>\u00a0could enable children or grandchildren to learn together with their parents or grandparents who might not be familiar with online programs<\/span>,\u201d she said<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cStaff who provide direct care for people with dementia sa<\/span>i<\/span>d that the\u00a0<\/span>iSupport<\/span>\u00a0would enable them to refer carers to relevant learning materials and interact with them in order to bring positive changes in care planning, coping and self-help.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Stakeholders in the study said that\u00a0<\/span>iSupport<\/span>\u00a0not only improved access to education and skill training, but also provided flexibility for carers to learn, share their experiences with others and to overcome social isolation.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

They also suggested that\u00a0<\/span>iSupport<\/span>\u00a0would be beneficial for carers living in rural and remote areas and for those carers still in the paid workforce who were unable to access face-to-face programs.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Following the pilot, the program is now open for further testing among the carer community to ensure the final program is as relevant and practical as possible.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
