Considerations associated with using synchronous or asynchronous approaches to learning

When teaching online, an important consideration that you’ll need to give for the time-related delivery of teaching materials will be whether this should occur synchronously (at the same time) or asynchronously.  Synchronous and asynchronous approaches each attract various inherent benefits and limitations and deciding on what is right for you will be context dependant for the topic and activity.

This table has been developed to assist you to determine whether synchronous or asynchronous approaches will best suit your online teaching needs.  A list of important considerations has been provided, as well as whether each is generally more effective with either synchronous or asynchronous delivery.  For those considerations that are relevant for your teaching (it is possible that not all will be), you may record your preference in the final column.
