We are now a few weeks into the program and are absolutely loving it. Being in the middle of US government is an incredible experience- from seeing the inner workings to really simple things like seeing your political hero in the corridors.<\/h5>\n<figure id=\"attachment_269\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-269\" style=\"width: 181px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-269\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/cusaps\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2018\/01\/Georgia-in-front-of-supreme-court-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"181\" height=\"136\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/cusaps\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2018\/01\/Georgia-in-front-of-supreme-court-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/cusaps\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2018\/01\/Georgia-in-front-of-supreme-court-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/cusaps\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2018\/01\/Georgia-in-front-of-supreme-court.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 181px) 100vw, 181px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-269\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Georgia standing in front of the Supreme Court building<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">After getting our ID badges on the first day, we began interning- everyone\u2019s experiences have been very different, with tasks ranging from giving tours to our constituents of the Capitol Building, answering constituent calls, attending Congressional committee hearings and briefings, and getting the Member\u2019s daily briefing binder ready in the morning, and much, much more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The weather was freezing- literally- when we arrived, we all woke up to a thick layer of snow (by Australian standards) a few days later. The same day that the Hume Highway back home started melting, DC experienced what has been dubbed a \u2018bomb cyclone\u2019, with temperatures in normally-warm Florida reaching so low that iguanas started falling from the sky (really falling from the trees, but it looked like the sky).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_268\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-268\" style=\"width: 123px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-268\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/cusaps\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2018\/01\/Jack-on-iced-over-reflecting-pool-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"123\" height=\"164\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/cusaps\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2018\/01\/Jack-on-iced-over-reflecting-pool-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/cusaps\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2018\/01\/Jack-on-iced-over-reflecting-pool-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/cusaps\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2018\/01\/Jack-on-iced-over-reflecting-pool.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 123px) 100vw, 123px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-268\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jack standing on the iced over reflecting pool<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Last week we attended a briefing with the Congressional Liaison Office at the Australian Embassy. It was great to see fellow Australians and most excitingly to hear Australian colloquialisms again, like \u2018strewth\u2019 and \u2018g\u2019day\u2019. They provided a great explanation of the role of the Embassy and some of the ways they can help us.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a very exciting time in D.C.- the newspapers are talking about a possible government shutdown in the days ahead (the government will officially run out of money unless a bipartisan deal can be struck\u00a0before Friday, which the Democrats are insisting won\u2019t happen without some kind of deal on immigration and the controversial DACA program). The political landscape is proving to be a potent mix of short-term firestorms- such as the language the President may or may not have used to describe Haiti- and the long-term issues- like the budget and the Russia Investigation- which always seem as though they\u2019re slow-motion train wrecks waiting to be fixed or go up in flames.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, though, there are calls to be answered, and memos to be drafted, and an abundance of identical halls to get hopelessly lost in.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Jack Harrison and Georgia Hicks Hello from the United States!
