{"id":68,"date":"2018-12-14T11:44:00","date_gmt":"2018-12-14T01:14:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/digital-research-services\/?p=68"},"modified":"2019-01-30T13:28:48","modified_gmt":"2019-01-30T02:58:48","slug":"australias-first-digital-doctorate-takes-a-giant-step-forward","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/digital-research-services\/2018\/12\/14\/australias-first-digital-doctorate-takes-a-giant-step-forward\/","title":{"rendered":"Australia\u2019s first \u2018digital doctorate\u2019 takes a giant step forward"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-69 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/digital-research-services\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/83\/2018\/12\/research-image001.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"603\" height=\"271\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flinders.edu.au\/graduate-research\/inspire\/inspire-release-3.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Inspire Release 3<\/b><\/a><b>\u00a0will be live on the Monday December 17<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Early in 2018, the Office of Graduate Research (OGR) met with Digital Research Services (DRS) to re-imagine how\u202f Flinders \u202fcould best support HDR students to most efficiently \u202fachieve \u202fthe endpoint of their\u202f candidature, the \u202ffinal thesis.<\/p>\n<p>In three years of study and research, a lot needs to be coordinated. A student must select a supervisor, develop a research\u00a0proposal, provide a plan, follow the plan, obtain required training to develop skills for their future careers, undertake the research, submit publications, meet review deadlines, and publish their final thesis. The student,\u202ftheir supervisor and HDR coordinator need to communicate throughout to manage expectations and tasks.<\/p>\n<p>This administrative whirlpool can be difficult to coordinate. That is why in 2018 OGR and DRS introduced a new system to manage the \u202fentire HDR lifecycle.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flinders.edu.au\/graduate-research\/inspire\/welcome-to-inspire.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Inspire<\/a>\u202f is\u202f Australia\u2019s first \u2018digital doctorate\u2019, the one place where HDR students, supervisors, and others can see what is happening and what needs to be done to ensure HDR student success.<\/p>\n<p><b>Inspire Release 1<\/b> enabled students to analyse and develop the skills they need, using the world-leading \u202f<a href=\"http:\/\/www.flinders.edu.au\/graduate-research\/rest\/rest_home.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Research and Employability Skills Training (REST)<\/a>\u202f framework.<\/p>\n<p><b>Inspire Release 2\u00a0<\/b>\u202fmade it easier for students to modify their HDR candidature, by providing online forms and step-by-step workflows. A dashboard provided students, supervisors, and coordinators with a shared view of actions arising from these workflows.<\/p>\n<p>In\u202f\u00a0<b>Inspire Release\u202f3<\/b>, we\u2019re taking a giant leap forward, by enabling\u00a0<i>HDR student milestones<\/i> to be monitored:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li>Confirmation of Candidature<\/li>\n<li>Mid-Candidature Review<\/li>\n<li>Final Thesis Review<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This will make it much easier for a student and their supervisor to track progression on the way to the final thesis. A dashboard view with key deadlines will be provided in early 2019 to present this information clearly and simply.<\/p>\n<p>With Inspire Release 3, it will be easier for students to \u202fachieve timely\u00a0completion. Students and supervisors will know what\u2019s needed every step along the \u202fway and \u202fwill be notified of any actions they\u2019ll need to take.<\/p>\n<p>We thank all HDR students and supervisors for their patience during the transition phase from \u202f<i>RHD Research Excellence<\/i>\u202f to\u202f\u00a0<i>Inspire \u202f<\/i>for the submission of Milestones.
