{"id":1206,"date":"2014-02-11T11:21:21","date_gmt":"2014-02-11T01:51:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/encounter\/?p=1206"},"modified":"2014-02-11T11:21:21","modified_gmt":"2014-02-11T01:51:21","slug":"fridays-at-the-library","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/encounter\/2014\/02\/11\/fridays-at-the-library\/","title":{"rendered":"Fridays at the Library"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_1228\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1228\" style=\"width: 284px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/encounter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2014\/02\/DR-GLEN-D-EDWARDS-PTSD-250403-resized.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1228\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/encounter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2014\/02\/DR-GLEN-D-EDWARDS-PTSD-250403-resized-284x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"284\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/encounter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2014\/02\/DR-GLEN-D-EDWARDS-PTSD-250403-resized-284x300.jpg 284w, https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/encounter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2014\/02\/DR-GLEN-D-EDWARDS-PTSD-250403-resized.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 284px) 100vw, 284px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1228\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr Glen Edwards<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Fridays at the Library are free events held at Flinders University Library showcasing a broad range of interesting developments.<\/p>\n<p>The first session for 2014 will be presented by alumnus Glen Edwards.\u00a0 <em>\u2018Challenging the Challenges: How education turned my life around\u2019<\/em> will look at the challenges Glen faced and overcame in his life, the benefits of education, and his endeavours to break down the stigma of mental illness.<\/p>\n<p>Glen suffered a difficult childhood.\u00a0 After failing grade seven, he worked in various unskilled occupations, eventually entering the military and serving in Vietnam as a medic.\u00a0 On returning to Australia he was encouraged to leave the military and seek higher education.\u00a0 At 27, he matriculated and went on to complete a Nursing Degree, then a Bachelor of Arts and a Psychology degree at Flinders University, studying full time and working part time to support his family.<\/p>\n<p>Since then he has had a distinguished record in research, clinical work, lecturing and helping individuals who have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and learning disabilities; travelling widely in the United States and Asia.<\/p>\n<p>Glen\u2019s presentation will take place on Friday 7 March from 3:30pm &#8211; 5pm at the Central Library.<\/p>\n<p>In other Semester One 2014 sessions, the University&#8217;s &#8216;digital blacksmith&#8217;, Paul Gardner-Stephen will outline using recycled smartphones after disasters, Daryle Rigney and Steve Hemming will report on their Ngarrindjeri Caring for Country program, Melanie Oppenheimer will celebrate the centenary of the Red Cross, and there will be a selection of films on the changing role of women in Australian society. \u00a0There will also be a commemoration of the bicentenary of the death of Matthew Flinders.<\/p>\n<p>Entry is free and it is not necessary to book.\u00a0 Join the <a href=\"https:\/\/listserver.flinders.edu.au\/mailman\/listinfo\/fridaylib\">email list<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Fridays at the Library are free events held at Flinders University Library showcasing a broad range of interesting developments.
