Currently in its twentieth year the Heather Barnes Scholarship is funded from a donation made by the late Mrs Heather Barnes, to provide financial support to an undergraduate student enrolled in the second or later year of their course. The scholarship assists students in financial need of a high academic merit to continue to learn and develop as their degree progresses.<\/p>\n

\u201cBeing the 2016 recipient of the Heather Barnes Scholarship has been an invaluable part of my development over the academic year so far. Coming from a rural background has made attending university more of a challenging experience for me than most, however this scholarship has allowed me to best equip myself with the materials required to give me the best opportunity for success.\u201d – Mariah Castignani<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Heather Barnes passed away earlier this year and her friendship and support of Flinders University, and the students who attend here, will always be remembered. Having graduated from Flinders with a Bachelor of Arts (French and History), she also contributed as a former Executive member of the Flinders Convocation Committee, and was actively involved in the establishment of the successful University of the Third Age on campus. Heather\u2019s husband Ronald Barnes was Pro-Chancellor at Flinders University (1992 \u2013 1998).<\/p>\n

In 1996 she created the Heather Barnes Scholarship which has given many high achieving students facing financial hardship the opportunity to pursue with their study. Financial hardship scholarships not only provide immediate financial relief they are inherently a vote of confidence for students and contribute to greater access to education for all. Heather Barnes is pictured on the left together with\u00a0the then Flinders\u00a0Chancellor, Sister Deirdre Jordon AC,\u00a0and 1996 Scholarship recipient Heather MacKenzie-Ross.<\/p>\n
