{"id":594,"date":"2026-04-02T09:41:24","date_gmt":"2026-04-01T23:11:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/fhmri\/?p=594"},"modified":"2026-04-07T15:51:56","modified_gmt":"2026-04-07T06:21:56","slug":"humans-of-fhmri-benjamin-hoy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/fhmri\/2026\/04\/02\/humans-of-fhmri-benjamin-hoy\/","title":{"rendered":"Humans of FHMRI: Benjamin Hoy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Meet <a href=\"https:\/\/researchnow.flinders.edu.au\/en\/persons\/benjamin-hoy\/\">Benjamin Hoy,<\/a> a PhD candidate in Pain &amp; Sensory Cell Biology, who\u2019s diving into one of the most complex challenges in healthcare: understanding pain.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Benjamin\u2019s journey with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flinders.edu.au\/\">Flinders University<\/a> began with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flinders.edu.au\/study\/courses\/bachelor-medical-science\">a Bachelor of Medical Science, Physiology &amp; Neuroscience<\/a>, followed by Honours in Pain and Sensory Cell Biology.<\/p>\n<p>Part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flinders.edu.au\/fhmri\/research\/neuroscience\/research-groups\">FHMRI\u2019s Pain and Cell Neurobiology Lab<\/a>, his research focuses on using living sensory-neuron biosensors to better understand and classify pain states, with the broader goal of improving pain diagnosis and treatment. His work also engages with advanced in vitro platforms, including microfluidic technologies, as emerging tools for modelling human-relevant nerve systems.<\/p>\n<p>So, what led him down this path?<\/p>\n<p>For Benjamin, it started with a clear motivation: making a difference in an area where better solutions are urgently needed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em><strong>I wanted to contribute to research with real translational potential, particularly in chronic pain,<\/strong><\/em>\u201d he explains. \u201c<em><strong>It\u2019s an area where improved diagnosis and treatment could have a huge impact.<\/strong>\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Like many PhD students, Benjamin quickly discovered that research is about much more than experiments and data.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201c<strong>What\u2019s surprised me most is how broad the experience is,<\/strong><\/em>\u201d he says. <em><strong>\u201cIt\u2019s not just about generating data, it\u2019s also about problem-solving, collaboration, communication, and learning to navigate uncertainty.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>One unexpected skill that\u2019s become a big part of his journey? Science communication.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>\u201cI didn\u2019t expect to develop it so strongly<\/strong>,\u201d<\/em> Benjamin admits.<em> \u201c<\/em><strong><em>But being able to explain complex ideas clearly, whether in presentations, papers, or even conversations, is incredibly important.<\/em>\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Of course, research doesn\u2019t always go to plan, and that\u2019s where some of the biggest lessons happen.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>\u201cResearch is rarely linear,<\/strong><\/em>\u201d he says. <em>\u201c<strong>Some of the most valuable progress actually comes from experiments that don\u2019t work. They force you to think differently, adapt, and ask better questions.<\/strong>\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>For anyone considering a PhD, Benjamin\u2019s advice is simple but honest: follow your curiosity.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201c<strong>Make sure you\u2019re genuinely interested in the question you\u2019re working on,<\/strong>\u201d<\/em> he says. <em><strong>\u201cThat curiosity is what keeps you going through the tougher moments. And you don\u2019t need to have everything figured out at the start, a PhD is as much about learning how to think as it is about learning what to do.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Looking ahead, Benjamin is particularly excited about tackling one of the biggest challenges in his field: making pain more measurable.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>\u201cPain is still largely assessed through subjective reporting,\u201d<\/strong><\/em> he explains. <em><strong>\u201cI\u2019m really interested in how cell-based biosensor systems could help identify biological signatures of pain and improve diagnosis in the future.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Now, alongside his PhD, he\u2019s also expanding his skillset through a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flinders.edu.au\/study\/courses\/postgraduate-business-administration-future-business\">Master of Business Administration Future Business \u2013 MBAFB<\/a>). His story is a great example of how curiosity, persistence, and adaptability can lead to meaningful impact.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Interested in making a difference through research?
