While decades of tobacco control have helped reduce smoking rates, more work is needed to reduce smoking-related disease, address inequities, support people to quit, and protect future generations.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">At the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flinders.edu.au\/fhmri\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Flinders Health and Medical Research Institute (FHMRI)<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, researchers are contributing evidence to strengthen tobacco control policy, support smoking cessation, reduce smoking-related disparities, and inform tobacco endgame strategies.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Through the\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Flinders Nicotine and Tobacco Control Research Group<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, FHMRI researchers are proud to be carrying out research to help achieve\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.gov.au\/resources\/publications\/national-tobacco-strategy-2023-2030?\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Australia\u2019s national\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Smokefree 2030<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0goal<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, protect future\u00a0generations\u00a0and hasten the end of the tobacco epidemic in Australia.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The group brings together\u00a0expertise\u00a0across tobacco control, public health, policy,\u00a0prevention\u00a0and cessation, with research spanning tobacco endgame strategies, smoking cessation support, risk behaviours, equity-focused public health responses, and the intersection between tobacco use and other health and social harms.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-653 size-medium alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/fhmri\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/113\/2026\/05\/Marita-Hefler-e1780124769932-212x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"212\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/fhmri\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/113\/2026\/05\/Marita-Hefler-e1780124769932-212x300.jpg 212w, https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/fhmri\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/113\/2026\/05\/Marita-Hefler-e1780124769932.jpg 373w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 212px) 100vw, 212px\" \/>Professor <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flinders.edu.au\/people\/marita.hefler\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Marita Hefler,<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> who is also convening the 2026 <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Asia Pacific Regional Tobacco Endgame summit<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, the week following World No Tobacco Day,\u00a0says tobacco research must focus on reducing harm in the communities most affected by smoking.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">&#8220;Around two thirds of people who smoke will die early, many after suffering ill-health for years. Cigarettes are the most lethal consumer product in history. Other dangerous products are removed from sale, yet tobacco is often more available than food. Thousands of Australians successfully quit smoking each\u00a0year,\u00a0and\u00a0stay quit. The health benefits of stopping smoking are immediate and long-term. The financial benefits of stopping smoking are the\u00a0added bonus. How do I know this?
