Semester Two goes to 12 teaching weeks

The University has approved a change to Semester Two from 13 teaching weeks to 12 teaching weeks, effective from Semester Two 2014.

Previously the University’s academic year has been based on two 13-week teaching semesters (with week 14 an optional teaching week or swot vac).

In considering this proposal the Vice-Chancellor’s Committee noted the following benefits of changing Semester Two to comprise 12 teaching weeks (with week 13 an optional teaching week or swot vac):

• an easing of the challenging time pressures which currently affect the finalisation of Semester Two results for those students seeking to graduate at the December graduation ceremonies;

• allowing supplementary examinations for Semester Two to be held before the end of the calendar year, noting that it should be educationally advantageous for students to undertake supplementary examination as close as possible to the original examination;

• the University’s academic calendar would more closely align with the academic calendar at the University of Adelaide, which has two 12-week semesters with an option for an additional 13th week in First Semester.

The approved schedule of dates for 2014 has been published at http://www.flinders.edu.au/current-students/dates/.

Topic coordinators and other teaching staff are asked to ensure that any changes that are required to topic teaching patterns are identified as soon as possible in order for implementation of this change to take place from Semester Two 2014.
