Women and Gender Studies Annual Public Lecture

This year’s Women’s and Gender Studies Annual Public Lecture will be given by Professor Shurlee Swain of the Australian Catholic University.

The lecture on 6 May is entitled Feminism and the Royal Commission into Institutional Child Sexual Abuse.

The establishment of a Royal Commission with an exclusive focus on institutional child sexual abuse has caused disquiet on several fronts, including amongst feminists who fear that it marks a return to a focus on ‘stranger danger’, diverting attention from sexual abuse within the home.

Professor Swain argues, however, that the Royal Commission would not have been possible without the work of feminists in the 1970s who gave victim/survivors a language through which to describe their experiences and conceptualise them as abuse.

The lecture is the fifth Annual Public Lecture. It will be held at Flinders University’s Victoria Square building: Level 1, 182 Victoria Square at 6pm. For more information, and to RSVP, contact jan.sidford@flinders.edu.au
