NAIDOC in August at Flinders

tilesThe Flinders Indigenous Student Association is pleased to host NAIDOC in August @ Flinders, to be held on Friday 8 August on Flinders University Plaza from 10am until 3pm.

NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Because the events fall during the University’s winter break, this later event offers an opportunity to showcase and celebrate the past, present and future of Indigenous culture to the Flinders community.

On the Plaza there will be a smoking ceremony, a performance by the Paitya Dance Group and an opportunity to try traditional food, painting and weaving workshops, as well as information stalls and raffles. At 3pm in North Lecture Theatre 2, Humanities, there will also be a special screening of Utopia, the powerful documentary film by John Pilger.

The Flinders Indigenous Student Association feels that this event is crucial in providing awareness of Indigenous culture and people at University, as non-Indigenous students have commented on the lack of personal experience with Indigenous communities; FISA hopes to show that we are here and we are proud.
