Eric Richards honoured with seminar

EricPre-eminent migration historian and long-time Flinders academic Emeritus Professor Eric Richards has been honoured with an international seminar.

Around 80 people attended the seminar on June 12 held in honour of the former Chair of History who remains very active in research and PhD supervision in the School of International Studies.

His reputation as an expert in the history of migration to Australia from Britain, with a special focus on Scotland, has led to many accolades and awards, most recently as the Carnegie Trust Centenary Professor in Scotland in 2014.

International scholars Professor David Fitzpatrick from Trinity College, Dublin, and Professor Marjory Harper from Aberdeen University in Scotland joined Australian historians to present at the seminar at Flinders University Victoria Square.

The event was organised by the current Chair of History, Professor Melanie Oppenheimer and Dr Margrette Kleinig, a former PhD student of Professor Richards, and was sponsored by the School of International Studies, History SA and the Royal Caledonian Society.

A festschrift in the form of an edited collection or special thematic in an academic journal will be forthcoming.
