Investigators run hot for Science Week

1754_bigAugust is the time for National Science Week, and Flinders will be showcasing some of the potentially life-changing research emerging from our Faculty of Science and Engineering in our new Flinders Investigators Public Lectures. The dedicated Science Week event will feature three thought-provoking lectures under the theme Making waves: the science of light.

Hosted at each of our three Adelaide campuses, the lectures will cover a broad range of topics including solar power, the effect of light on your internal body clock, and using light to scan and monitor our environment.

Lighting up the hottest topic under the sun – solar power – 5.30pm to 7.30pm, Monday 17 August, Flinders University, Victoria Square.

Flinders academics Professor Joe Shapter and Professor David Lewis both have an avid interest in solar power, but who holds the more promising solution for the world’s growing energy demands? Come along and decide for yourself!

The dawn of a new technology – ReTimer glasses – 5.30pm to 7.30pm, Tuesday, 18 August, Flinders at Tonsley.

Managing Director of Re-Timer Pty Ltd, Ben Olsen, will talk about this new technology which harnesses the power of light to adjust internal body clocks, and explain how the idea evolved from the research labs at Flinders University into a viable commercial reality. Hosted at our flagship new Tonsley building, this is also a great opportunity to see our innovative new facilities for yourself.

The sky’s the limit – Airborne Research Australia and Geographical Information Systems – 5.30pm to 7.30pm,  Wednesday, 19 August, Science Innovation and Learning Centre (SILC) Building, Flinders main campus.

Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) is a remote sensing technology used to measure our environment. Andrew McGrath from Airborne Research Australia, and Robert Keane from Flinders’ School of the Environment will provide an overview of this vital technology. Andrew will highlight its impact on airborne research and Robert will identify some of the terrestrial applications.
