Streets of Papunya launches on Friday

Doris Bush imageThe Flinders City Gallery launches its showcase of recent and historical work from the famed Western Desert community of Papunya this Friday (February 19) at 6pm.

Streets of Papunya: the reinvention of Papunya painting celebrates the renaissance of painting in one of the best-known locations of art production in Central Australia since the establishment of Papunya Tjupi Arts in 2007, and reveals the role of women at the forefront of this revival. These rising art stars are the daughters of the men who founded the desert art movement at Papunya in the 1970s.

Early Papunya paintings from the Flinders University Art Museum collection and significant other loans, including from the National Museum of Australia and Art Gallery of South Australia, illustrate these connections.

Nici Cumpston, Curator of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art at the Art Gallery of South Australia, will speak at the launch on Friday evening. If you are interested in attending, please RSVP to the gallery on 8207 7055 or email city.gallery@flinders.edu.au

Curated by scholar Vivien Johnson, the exhibition runs from 19 February until 17 April. There will be a floortalk with the curator and some of the artists at 2pm on Saturday, 20 February.
