The first Flinders Investigators lecture of 2016 will be held on Wednesday, 16 March at the Adelaide Festival Centre, Lyrics Room when Professor Julian Meyrick delivers A Marriage Made in Heaven but Living in Hell: the Arts and the Sciences in Australian Universities Today.

The arts and the sciences seem at daggers drawn in today’s cash-strapped, rankings-obsessed, ultra-competitive research environment.  What are the roots of their antagonism?  What are its effects?  In this lecture Professor Julian Meyrick, Strategic Professor of Creative Arts at Flinders, revisits the famous Two Cultures Debate fifty years ago between physicist and novelist CP Snow and literary critic FR Leavis, and asks whether the oceanic divide between the two disciplinary realms should now be crossed.
