Are trade agreements bad for public health?

The effects of free trade agreements on health will be the topic for an upcoming Southgate Institute Policy Club on May 3 at Flinders University Victoria Square.

Guest speakers Professor Ron Labonté and Dr Deborah Gleeson will look at the issues arising for public health with the imminent introduction of a 12-country Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement, across areas such as intellectual property rights and access to medicines, investor state provisions and new rules that would constrain public health regulatory space.

Professor Ron Labonté, who holds a Canada Research Chair in the area of Globalization and Health Equity at the University of Ottawa, and was the Chair of the Globalization Knowledge Network for the WHO Commission on the Social Determinants of Health, will present The Trans-Pacific Partnership: A 21st Century Agreement or a Public Health Washout?

Dr Deborah Gleeson, a lecturer in Public Health at La Trobe University’s School of Psychology and Public Health whose research focuses on the intersection between trade policy and public health, will present What will the TPP mean for health in Australia?

The event flier is here. If you wish to attend, please RSVP by email, or you can see the event  live-streamed here.
