Professionals Lecture: Domestic violence and diversity: what we don’t know

Domestic violence and abuse affects a significant number of Australians but attention has primarily been paid to the abuse of women by male partners.

This reflects data indicating that in the majority of cases it is men who are perpetrators.

But what about relationships other than those involving a man and a woman? Associate Professor Damien Riggs will discuss a research project undertaken with colleagues at Flinders University, Central Queensland University, and the University of Sunderland in the United Kingdom, focused on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people’s experiences of both human-human abuse and human-animal abuse.

The findings highlight the importance of service provision to these diverse populations, and the need to support those who live with animal companions.
