High achiever wins Terry Roberts Memorial Scholarship

Flinders student India Shackleford has been named a joint recipient of the 2017 Terry Roberts Memorial Scholarship, which assists Aboriginal university students with their study and living expenses.

India is currently undertaking a Bachelor of Enhanced Science (Honours).

She was awarded her scholarship at a ceremony at Parliament House attended by the Minister for Higher Education and Skills, Susan Close.

The Terry Roberts Memorial Scholarship was established in 2007 in honour of the late Minister for Aboriginal Affairs who died in 2006.

The scholarship awards $2000 annually for up to four years, help Aboriginal students excel and succeed in tertiary education and beyond.

The inaugural scholarship recipient, Rebecca Richards, later became Australia’s first Aboriginal Rhodes Scholar.

India plans to use her scholarship funds to purchase textbooks and scientific equipment relating to her course.

She wishes to become a forensic scientist and use her qualifications for the benefit of the Australian community by helping to ensure that justice is served.
