How the public and private sectors can form winning partnerships

Flinders political scientist Dr Joshua Newman has published a book on ‘Governing Public-Private Partnerships’ that looks at how governments can join forces with the private sector to deliver enhanced public services and improve living standards.

Governments are increasingly looking at partnering with the private sector to enhance value-for-money in public service delivery.

But these partnerships can end in political and financial disaster if they are not managed properly.

In this book, Dr Newman compares two high-profile collaborations in urban transport – the Sydney Airport Rail Link and the Canada Line in Vancouver – to uncover the factors that contribute to success or failure in public-private enterprise.

Using primary documents like contracts and bids and personal interviews with CEOs, activists, and cabinet-level politicians, the book concludes that governments need to be active managers, innovators, and network builders if they want to achieve successful partnerships with the private sector.

Copies of the book can be ordered via McGill-Queen’s University Press in Canada.
