Environmental champion shows political prowess

First-year psychology and criminology student Eva Coussens has strutted her political stuff and had her Youth Bill on the environment passed in Youth Parliament.

The YMCA SA Youth Parliament scheme invites young people to develop their leadership and public speaking skills by developing their own bill under the protocols that apply in the real South Australian Parliament.

Participants then have the opportunity to argue for their bill to be passed alongside fellow Youth Parliamentarians during ‘Parliament Week’.

Eva was part of a team who wrote a bill prohibiting the sale and use of non-biodegradable packaging in fast food establishments.

After rigorous debating, the bill won the majority vote in both the upper and lower houses.

Bills that are passed by the Youth Parliament are sent on to government, enabling young South Australians to make a real difference to their communities.

Importantly, participants learn about the political and legal processes involved with making laws, and develop skills in leadership, public speaking and team-building.

During the week-long experience, Eva and her team were also afforded the opportunity to meet the Governor in his home.

“One of the best parts of the program is that it connects young people with politicians and decision-makers and gives them amazing opportunities to be heard and have an impact,” said Eva.

“Youth Parliamentarians also become more informed and effective members of their local communities, and are empowered to become social advocates.

“I found the experience to be life-changing and next year I am hoping to be on the program’s volunteer task-force,” said Eva.

The program is run by the YMCA of South Australia and generously supported by the South Australian Government (through the Office for Youth) and the Law Foundation of South Australia.
