Tablet technology for dementia wins seed funding

A Flinders research team has been granted seed funding to develop a tablet-based application to assist dementia patients.

The project team includes Professor Anthony Maeder and Dr Lua Perimal-Lewis from the Flinders Digital Health Research Centre; Associate Professor Jennifer Tieman, Dean (Research) of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences; and Professor Sue Gordon from the Discipline of Rehabilitation, Aged and Extended Care.

They are working on adaptive technology to enable dementia sufferers to stay in their own home, and have had seed funding of $473, 607 from the Dementia and Aged Care Services Fund run by the Australian Department of Health.

The multidisciplinary research aims to increase the independence and confidence of people living with dementia, and increase the capacity of the health and aged care sectors to provide services for older Australians living with debilitating conditions.

Professor Anthony Maeder, who is heading up the project, also leads the Flinders Digital Health Research Centre.

The Centre was established last year as a multidisciplinary entity to support the University’s expansion into health technology.

The project will run until June 2019.
