Health system expert brings wisdom to Adelaide

Professor Terry Young of Brunel University London (pictured) is coming to South Australia to work with Flinders researchers on improving patient flow in our local health system.

Just as Henry Ford understood that new techniques could transform the car manufacturing industry, Professor Young believes improvements in health care could come from a better designed care model.

Professor Young will be working specifically with Flinders University’s Head of Heath Care Management, Professor Mark Mackay.

They are both part of an international, multi-disciplinary collaboration called The Cumberland Initiative, aimed at improving the health sector.

Professor Young will also be presenting at the College of Medicine and Public Health seminar, Missing in Action: Can you design a better health system around you?”, to be held at Flinders Victoria Square on 8 November 2017.

Professor Mackay believes Australian health care providers, particularly hospitals, have much to gain from the visiting expertise of Professor Young.

“While it’s clear that our future health professionals and our current health professionals have a focus on building and practicing their clinical skills, they are key decision-makers in the system.

“Consequently, it’s important that these decision-makers and those involved in health management have the opportunity to learn about tools that may help improve the flow of patients through the health system,” says Professor Mackay.

The Cumberland Initiative is the major international partner in a Premier’s International Research Fund grant that was awarded to Professor Mackay and his colleagues.

The grant is being used to investigate patient flow issues in South Australia and has resulted in academics and students from Brunel, Cardiff and Queens Universities travelling to Adelaide over the last two years.

The seminar for health care managers and practitioners, “Missing in Action: Can you design a better health system around you?”, is on 8 November 2017, 5.00pm-7.00pm at Flinders Victoria Square.
