Change of name for Flinders University

The South Australian Parliament has passed an amendment to the Flinders University Act 1966 which sees Flinders officially change its name from “Flinders University of South Australia” to “Flinders University”.

The change has important implications for the way in which staff attribute their research and academic articles and publications.

Flinders staff and academic status holders/affiliates now need to ensure that any affiliation/address information in an article or publication includes “Flinders University”.

Using other descriptors such as “Flinders University of South Australia”, “FUSA”, Flinders Medical Centre or Centre or Institute names, without specifically using “Flinders University”, risks the research, article or publication not being credited to the University.

Where staff wish to acknowledge their involvement in a Centre of Institute, the attribution should be of the form of, for example, “Ross McKinnon, Flinders Centre for Innovation in Cancer, College of Medicine and Public Health, Flinders University”.

Staff who are in doubt should contact Ben Jacobs in Research Development and Support (ben.jacobs@flinders.edu.au) for clarification.

Using the proper attribution will ensure that research outputs are duly recognised in assessments of the University’s research outputs, impact and standing, including international rankings.
