Flinders strengthens its global reach

The international reach of Flinders University has been bolstered through a series of important visits from Flinders’ overseas partners in recent weeks.

A delegation from the Universitas Padjadjaran (Unpad), Bandung, West Java, Indonesia – including Vice Rector Dr Arry Bainus – came to Flinders on 8 December to take part in the 4th Mixed Methods Regional Symposium.

Academics from the Universitas Padjadjaran and Flinders are currently working together on an ARC Linkage Project funding application, and the visit gave both institutions the opportunity to explore further collaborative research opportunities.

A delegation from Suzhou University of Science and  Technology (SUST), Jiangsu Province, China – including SUST’s Vice President, Professor Jianrong WU – also came to Flinders on 8 December.

This was SUST’s first visit to Flinders, having signed a Dual Degree Agreement in 2016 to enable undergraduate students enrolled in select SUST business programs to complete part of their study at Flinders

The visit allowed SUST delegates to discuss further collaboration with Flinders in the areas of Education and Environmental Science.

Professor Jim Mitchell and the College of Science and Engineering hosted a delegation from the Yellow Sea Fisheries Research Institute (Qingdao, China) and Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences on 30 November.

The Yellow Sea Fisheries Research Institute (YSFRI), a valued partner of Flinders University, is a large, specialised and globally pivotal organisation for fisheries and aquaculture that hosts more than a dozen reference laboratories for international standards.

Three Flinders’ undergraduate students from Biological Sciences have participated in a New Colombo Plan funded research placement with YSFRI, with hopes of further student placements in coming years.

The International Centre hosted a visit by Mr Abdul Hadi Mustaffa, Education Attache/Consul – Consulate General of Malaysia, and also representative of Education Malaysia Australia, on 29 November.

Mr Mustaffa met with Malaysian students currently studying at Flinders and discussed opportunities for Flinders’ students to complete part of their studies in Malaysia.
