Spreading the message of health and happiness

Boasting an impressive range of eats and treats that are both delicious and nutritious, the bubbly team at health café Nutrition Republic are changing the world one bite at a time.

Located in the Student Plaza at the Bedford Park campus, Nutrition Republic opened at Flinders in October 2017.

Husband and wife team Nicole and IIija Sumracki created Nutrition Republic to share their vision of a healthier, happier, more food-conscious world.

“We are an organic espresso and elixir bar, specialising in organic coffee, protein superfood smoothies, coconut water elixirs, healthy plant-based meals and raw desserts made with love,” says Nicole.

“We cater for a variety of dietary requirements and our food is 100% gluten and dairy-free.

“We’re here to inspire and educate people to make conscious food choices by providing real, wholesome, nourishing food that is healthy, quick, easy and affordable,” Nicole says.

The Bedford Park café is Nutrition Republic’s third outlet but first ‘on-campus’ location.

“One of the reasons we chose an on-campus location was because of customer demand and the opportunity to fuel the brains of Flinders staff and students with good, wholesome food while they are studying and working,” says Nicole.

“We love being able to connect with the Flinders community and hear about all the interesting topics our customers are teaching and learning about, the amazing research they are undertaking and what they hope to achieve in life.

“Our current store leader is Nicky, one of our superstars from our King William Road location.

“Her personality is infectious and she loves interacting with customers and getting to know them.

“She’s studied nutrition and is very knowledgeable about our products and can answer any question our customers have,” Nicole says.

What’s on the menu

The full Nutrition Republic menu is available on both a dine-in or takeaway basis and there are several grab-and-go options to make healthy eating on-the-run even easier.

“Our organic espresso is $3.50 and our latte is $4.00,” says Nicole.

“We always serve double ristrettos [two short shots of espresso] in our coffees, giving a strong, smooth flavour without the cost of an extra shot.

“We also offer a 50c discount on all coffees to customers who bring their own cup.

“Our raw treats start at $4.00, smoothies at $6.00, savoury items at $8.00, and savoury slice and salad combos at $14.00.

“Our outdoor tables make the perfect on-campus meeting point and all our takeaway food is served in recyclable packaging,” Nicole says.

Specialties

“Our specialities are made from natural, pesticide-free ingredients that are free from additives, colours and preservatives,” says Nicole.

Being a strictly dairy and gluten-free café, Nutrition Republic can confidently cater for people with gluten allergies or sensitivities and for those with dairy intolerances.

Nutrition Republic also offers a rewards card for coffee, smoothies and raw cakes and a free treat for customers who’ve made ten purchases.

Social conscience

“Something we are super proud of as a business is our ongoing contribution to an ongoing water sanitisation project in Zimbabwe and our recent emergency donation to the North East African Hunger appeal in a time of extreme famine,” Nicole says.

“To date we have raised and donated over $29,000 to these causes and we are always happy to chat about our charitable work with our customers.”

Opening hours

Nutrition Republic is now closed for the festive season but will re-open on Monday 29 January 2018.

Opening hours will continue to be Monday- Friday from 8.00am-5.00pm.

Staff and students can stay up-to-date with the latest menu and specials by following the Nutrition Republic Facebook page.
