Comics brighten the classroom and tackle tough topics

The Flinders Life Narrative Research Group is hosting a leading scholar in the field of graphic narratives this month.

Professor Monica Chiu, from the University of New Hampshire, is a former Fulbright scholar with a focus on Asian/American graphic narratives. Her current interests include graphic illness narratives and manga, which will be the subject of three events she will present over 10 and 12 April 2018:

  • Public lecture on the impact of Marisa Marchetto’s graphic memoir Cancer Vixen (focusing on fighting breast cancer) and Ann Tenna (a sci-fi work about a fashion gossip blogger). Tuesday 10 April, 11am
  • Open masterclass on Australian Graphic Narratives. Tuesday 10 April, 1 – 3pm
  • Introductory workshop on teaching with comic books in the school or university classroom. Thursday 12 April, 11am
