Champion midwife to present at awards event

Professor Charlene Thornton has won the esteemed ‘HDA Women’s Excellence in Research Award’ and will speak at an event on 16 May 2018, when her award will be presented.

A Midwife and epidemiologist in Flinders’ College of Nursing and Health Sciences, Professor Thornton was acknowledged for her innovative research in improving health outcomes and wellbeing for mothers and babies.

The annual award is presented by the Healthy Development Adelaide (HDA) research and innovation cluster, which includes representatives from South Australia’s government, tertiary, private and not-for-profit sectors, including Flinders University. Highly competitive, it is bestowed on a mid-career woman for excellence in research achievement in the field of developmental health and comes with a $1,000 prize.

Professor Thornton’s key interests are pregnancy complications and how they affect birth outcomes and maternal and infant health. Her research focuses on the use of linked population datasets and mixed methodology to establish benchmarks and improve the health of mothers and babies, which will be the subject of her talk.
