Medical star wins Governor’s Aboriginal Youth Award

Flinders Bachelor of Medical Science graduate Kaitlin Morrison has received the inaugural Higher Education Award in The Governor’s Aboriginal Youth Awards, which recognise successful Aboriginal South Australians aged between 15 and 29.

The Governor of South Australia, His Excellency the Honourable Hieu Van Le AC, launched the scheme late last year with a Sports prize, and this year expanded the program to include a Higher Education prize and an Arts prize, which were awarded during a ceremony at Government House on 17 May 2018.

Ms Morrison, 21, has enjoyed significant academic success at Flinders University, winning the 2017 Ken Wanganeen Medal for the best overall academic performance by an Indigenous student in a completed bachelor degree, as well as being a recipient of the Chancellor’s Letter of Commendation.

She is currently undertaking an honours program with the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute, focusing on type 2 diabetes and vascular complications in Indigenous people.  After completing her honours program, Ms Morrison plans to write a PhD in the field of medical science. She is also an accomplished violinist and is a current member of the Adelaide Youth Symphony Orchestra.

In recognition of her impressive academic achievements, Ms Morrison received a certificate of recognition signed by the Governor, a $3000 prize and the opportunity to be linked to a relevant mentor.
