Timor-Leste forges a path to the future

The Ambassador for Timor-Leste to Australia, His Excellency Mr Abel Guterres, is visiting Flinders University to speak at a symposium at Bedford Park that is hosting scholars from around Australia over 18 and 19 September 2018.

Timor-Leste (also known as East Timor) is the youngest state in the Asia-Pacific and is embarking on a rapid pace of change following decades of conflict last century. Recently emerged from a focus of healing and cohesion, its leaders are looking to grow foreign relationships, diversify the economy and build employment and wellbeing for its people.

The Flinders/Swinburne University of Technology joint symposium is gathering scholars from across Australia together with special guests HE Mr Guterres and Mr Felix Piedade (of the Ministry of State for Presidential Council of Ministers, Timor-Leste) to explore the state’s current issues in development and international relations.

Flinders’ Associate Professor Udoy Saikia will present on the topic of youth and wellbeing in Timor-Leste, and David Willis, a Flinders PhD candidate in international relations, will discuss the nation’s options for geopolitics and foreign policy.

The event is being live-streamed to students at Flinders and Swinburne University.
