League of Scholars tracks down research stars

Several shining lights and research leaders at Flinders University appear in a special report on areas of research excellence published by The Australian.

This year’s ‘Research – the Stars of 2018’ special report, compiled by the Higher Education team at The Australian, used ‘deep data’ obtained by analytics group League of Scholars, largely based on Google Scholar taxonomy, to ‘unearth’ a list of researchers and research institutions across more than 250 fields of research.

The alternative ‘tour’ of Australian’s research landscape ‘delves deep’ into research output, the publishers say.

“As a result, we recognise the highly worthwhile achievements of people who are not otherwise acknowledged, apart from by their peers,” say The Australian journalist Tim Dodd and League of Scholars chief executive Paul McCarthy in the liftout magazine (published Wednesday 26 September).

Among the South Australians profiled in the magazine were research leaders identified at Flinders University, including:

In the Health and Medical Sciences section of The Australian special report – Matthew Flinders Distinguished Professor David Watson (based at the Flinders Centre for Innovation in Cancer) was a research leader in surgery. Professor Watson has been Head of the University’s Surgery department at Flinders Medical Centre since 2002. He is joined by Dr Alan Wigg (also SA Health) in Gastroenterology & Hepatology, and Dr David Ross in Haematology.

In the Social Sciences section of the research study – Dr Joshua Newman (College of Business, Government and Law) for his work in Public Policy and Administration and Professor Lambert Schuwirth (College of Medicine and Public Health) for Science & Engineering Education.

In the Physics and Mathematics section, Dr Darryl Jones (research fellow in the College of Science and Engineering) was selected as a leader in the field of spectroscopy and molecular physics. He is working to develop more effective radiation therapies.

In the Life Sciences and Earth Sciences category, hydrogeology researcher Peter Cook (National Centre for Groundwater Research and Training based at Flinders University) for his work in Hydrology and Water Resources.
