Investigator awards for two exceptional PhD students

Future leaders in sleep and cardiology won awards after presenting their research to international audiences at two major conferences in October.

PhD student Laura Gell won the New Investigator Award at the annual Sleep DownUnder conference in Brisbane, held over 17 -20 October 2018.

Ms Gell is a research assistant at Flinders Medical Device Research Institute, completing her PhD under the supervision of Professor Peter Catcheside.

Sleep DownUnder is hosted by the Australasian Sleep Association and is the key conference for those involved in the science and management of sleep issues. The 2018 event brought together approximately 750 researchers and practitioners spanning all areas of sleep research and clinical practice, including internationally renowned presenters from Australia and overseas.

The New Investigator Award for excellence in the conduct and presentation of research shortlists applicants to present at the conference. Ms Gell won the award for her outstanding presentation on ‘Investigating the physiological mechanisms underlying airflow recovery following obstruction in obstructive sleep apnoea’.

PhD student Dhani Dharmaprani won The Asia Pacific Heart Rhythm Society’s Young Investigator Award at its 11th annual scientific meeting in Taiwan – one of the biggest meetings in the field of cardiac electrophysiology – also held over 17 – 20 October.

A student of Matthew Flinders Fellow Associate Professor Anand Ganesan, Ms Dhani’s exceptional talk presented her research on ‘Temporal Stability and Specificity of High Bipolar Electrogram Entropy Regions in Sustained Atrial Fibrillation (AF): Implications for Mapping’.

The society’s Young Investigator Award seeks to recognise and honour excellent contributions to the field of cardiac electrophysiology from early career clinicians and researchers.

Ms Dharmaprani competed with six finalists from around the world who presented their research at the event.
