Stem at the Tav, a pre-retirement super seminar, nanostructured hybrid materials, mental health in cancer, literacy at home and a healthy start for babies and toddlers round out the topics of upcoming free events at Flinders University.

Stem at the Tav

The final STEM at the Tav for 2018 will focus on the exciting things happening in sustainability at Flinders. Professor Karen Burke da Silva will talk about the Grow, Eat, Learn program, Cassie Hoepner will discuss Precious Plastics, and special guest Rachel McMillan from Scoop SA will add to an entertaining and informative event.

Super seminar this Thursday

UniSuper will visit Bedford Park campus on 1 November for a free seminar on pre-retirement essentials, aimed at helping members aged from 45 to 59 plan for their retirement.

Nanostructured Functional Hybrid Materials by ATRP

Dr Krzysztof Matyjaszewski of the Centre for Macromolecular Engineering, Carnegie Mellon University, will present examples of high precision materials created in his laboratories using Atom Transfer Radical Polymerisation, a technique he pioneered that has enabled a new level of control over polymer synthesis and is now one of the most effective and widely used forms of controlled radical polymerisation.

Mental health in cancer – two talks at the Flinders Centre for Innovation in Cancer

Visiting Professor Maggie Watson from the Institute of Cancer Research, UK, will discuss building bridges between cancer care and mental health by exploring the field of psycho-oncology, including what’s available, what’s missing and the costs of providing cancer services without quality mental health care.

Dr Lisa Beatty will outline the steps and challenges in developing complex psychosocial web-based interventions through a co-creation design process, using the example of an online psychosocial intervention she is developing for women with metastatic breast cancer.

Eat, play, sleep – a healthy start to life

Parents are advised to start their babies on solids when they are developmentally ready, sometime between 4-6 months, but how do you know the ideal time? Questions around a healthy start to life will be answered by Adelaide experts Dr Merryn Netting, Paediatric Dietitian and Research Fellow, SAHMRI and Dr Matthew Scholar, Paediatrician, Flinders Private Hospital.
