New policies on privacy and bullying

Draft new and revised policies on privacy and bullying are open for comment until 16 November 2018, via the Flinders Policy Library.

The draft Bullying Prevention and Management Policy draws on the University’s existing No Bullying at Flinders policy, and includes updates to reflect legislative and organisational structure changes.  It also reflects the University’s new framework which streamlines policy to be more principles-based rather than prescriptive.

The draft Privacy Policy has been developed to ensure the University complies with its obligations under the new Notifiable Data Breach (NDB) scheme, and the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulations.

Under the NDB scheme, entities must notify impacted individuals and the Australian Information Commissioner when a breach is likely to result in serious harm to that person.

The European Union (EU) has passed new laws including the General Data Protection Regulations, which Flinders is subject to because it provides services to people located in the EU, and monitors some EU individuals including alumni and visitors to websites. While a large portion of the requirements are similar to those applicable under the Australian Privacy Principles, additional rights include the right to have personal information erased, restrictions of processing, data portability, and rights to object and complain.
