Leading future health and physical education teaching

Joss Rankin, lecturer in Health, Physical and Outdoor Education, was recently invited by the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) to contribute to a major report on the national health and physical education curriculum.

It was a big task, aiming to map the Australian Health and Physical Education Curriculum against the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Future of Education and Skills: Education 2030 agenda.

This study was undertaken in ACARA’s national offices in Sydney, and Mr Rankin said that his focus of consulting with ACARA’s Natalie Jonas cut through the study of all learning areas to concentrate on the future direction of health and physical education.

“This was a valuable experience to investigate the implied and mandated intentions of the curriculum,” says Mr Rankin, “and to glimpse what we see for the future of HPE in Australia.”
