Settling in our new arrivals

Coinciding with Refugee Week, the next BRAVE lecture will focus on refugee experiences and outline key ways to promote positive outcomes for people arriving in Australia who have fled conflict, violence, persecution or human rights violations.

Over the last 10 years, Australia has resettled over 170,000 individuals trying desperately to start new lives in unfamiliar surroundings.

The transition to life in another country is rarely easy, framed by challenges in finding somewhere to live, securing work, learning a new language, and building social connections and a sense of belonging. These obstacles, often exacerbated by traumatic personal histories, can compromise the physical and mental health of new arrivals.

Associate Professor Anna Ziersch will present the latest research on the social determinants of health and wellbeing for people from refugee and asylum-seeking backgrounds.

She will be joined by a panel of researchers, service providers and people with refugee experience to discuss key ways to promote positive resettlement outcomes and good health for new arrivals in Australia.
