Mental health breakthroughs

The Breakthrough Mental Health Research Foundation is presenting its inaugural research forum on Tuesday 8 October during Mental Health Week, to broadcast the important advancements that Flinders researchers are making possible.

Mental Health Week is an annual, national event that helps improve community awareness and interest in mental health and wellbeing. The forum, being held from 10am at Flinders University’s Tonsley Campus (Level 5 Conference Room), will present the findings of five inspiring researchers and draw attention to the diversity and quality of work undertaken thanks to funding through the Breakthrough Mental Health Research Foundation.

An innovative research collective, the Breakthrough Foundation stemmed from Flinders Foundation, which has a 40-year history of supporting world-leading research and the health needs of its community including the Flinders Medical Centre and Flinders University.

For the forum, Professor Paul Ward (Professor of Public Health and Higher Degrees by Research Coordinator from the College of Medicine & Public Health) will provide an update on his continuing research into the mental health of doctors including addressing effective suicide prevention.

Other presentations will come from Professor Sharon Lawn on motivational interviewing as a virtual training tool, and Professor Reg Nixon, who will talk about preliminary findings into a new treatment program for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Professor Tracey Wade will offer an update on research addressing the genetic influence on eating disorders, and researcher Joanna Zhou will present her findings about the effectiveness of imagery re-scripting as a treatment for eating disorders.

To complete the forum, Dr Catherine Johnson from the College of Education, Psychology and Social Work will deliver a mindfulness session, to send the audience off with a clear mind to achieve more out of their day.

To secure your place at the event, email an RSVP to info@breakthroughfoundation.org.au or phone 08 8204 3017 by Wednesday 2 October.
