Voters swarm to vortex pic

Each year the Institute for Nanoscale Science and Technology showcases its imaging expertise though a photo competition. Following the winner’s announcement last year, a People’s Choice favourite has been named – with PhD student Aghil Igder taking out top votes for her beehive-like image.

The 2019 competition winner was selected by an expert judging panel including Monique Russell from Blend Creative Design Agency and Emeritus Professor Ian Gibbins.

Zhen He, a PhD candidate supervised by Professor Sarah Harmer, took home the honour in late December 2019 and was awarded a gift voucher valued at $200. His winning image (left) will be used for the cover of the Institute’s Annual Report.

To increase the profile of the Institute’s imaging expertise, a People’s Choice prize (sponsored by the Office of Communication, Marketing and Engagement) was introduced last year. Attracting over 200 votes through the Institute’s Facebook page, the initiative raised awareness of nano-imaging both within and outside the University.

Aghil Igder’s image of a membrane fabricated in Flinders’ famed Vortex Fluidic Device electron microscope won the popularity contest, earning her lunch at Alere. A PhD candidate supervised by Professor Colin Raston and Maya Roberts, Ms Igder will join Ms Roberts and Professor Raston in early February 2020 to celebrate at Flinders multi award-winning cafe.

The 2019 competition entries can be viewed on the University website.
