Health2Go goes virtual

Modern health clinic Health2Go, located at Flinders University’s Sturt campus, has introduced a new diabetes service and launched a range of telehealth services in response to COVID-19 to ensure the safety of patients and staff.

Optometry, speech pathology, physiotherapy and exercise physiology services are now delivered via videoconference and phone to patients, to reduce the risk of transmission of the virus.

The switch to telehealth is one of many recent changes at the health service, including the introduction of a diabetes clinic.

Experienced diabetes nurse practitioner and credentialed diabetes educator Toni Slotnes-O’Brien will deliver best possible care in the prevention and management of diabetes.

Ms Slotnes-O’Brien, who is also a Flinders University nursing lecturer, teaches patients about the management of Type 1 Diabetes, including pump management and continuous glucose monitoring, Type 2 Diabetes, Gestational Diabetes, insulin initiation and ongoing titration, and pre-diabetes.

“I provide education and motivation to assist people that are at risk of developing diabetes or have a diagnosis of diabetes to manage their condition,” she says.

“The more knowledge they have, the more confident they are in the management of their diabetes.”

Diabetes can be well managed by patients, however it is a complex condition that can cause many serious health complications, including heart attack, kidney disease, limb amputation, blindness, and mental health issues.

According to Diabetes Australia, Type 1 diabetes accounts for 10% of all diabetes, while Type 2 diabetes account for 85% of all diabetes.

“Early diagnosis and ongoing management and support reduce the risk of diabetics facing further health issues,” Ms Slotnes-O’Brien says.

“The more educated people are about the risk factors, the better.”

The Health2Go diabetes clinic is also a health lifestyle and weight management clinic, consulting with patients with or without a diabetes diagnosis.

Consultations are currently offered over the phone or via video to ensure safety during the COVID-19 crisis.
