Timely road safety reminder

At the beginning of a new semester and a new school term, staff are reminded of parking and speed restrictions around schools, kindergartens and child-care centres.

Councils actively monitor roads around children’s educational institutions and are sharing reminders that fines will be issued where road rules are breached, with the safety of children paramount.

Speed limits

Signs or zigzag lines indicate a 25kph limit around schools and kindergartens at any time children are present, or when lights are flashing (where installed).

No stopping

No standing zones adjacent school entrances indicate no stopping is allowed at all, which includes no standing for quick drop-offs or collection of children.

No parking zones

Brief drop-offs or collections are allowed in no parking zones, but vehicles cannot be parked. Children must immediately exit or enter the vehicle if stopping for this purpose.

Intersections

Parking is not allowed withing 10m of an intersection.

Driveways

When parking adjacent driveways, the front or the rear of the vehicle may be level with the driveway, but a car cannot be parked overlapping any portion of the driveway’s approach or departure points (where the footpath/verge meets the road).

Continuous white line

If a road has a continuous white centre line, a parked car must measure at least three metres from the centre line.

School crossings

Vehicles cannot stop within 20m of the approach side or 10m of the departure side of a school crossing

Other illegal parking activities

Other prohibited parking activities include parking on nature strips or footpaths, or double parking even for quick drop-offs or collection of children.
