Events celebrate arts value

Two events are celebrating the value of arts – a panel discussion exploring tensions between art practice, leadership and the shifting spaces art venues; and a baroque concert drawing on the 1802 encounter between Matthew Flinders and Nicolas Baudin.

Laboratory Adelaide – the value of culture

A panel discussion will explore art practice, leadership, and well-being within shifting physical/digital spaces.

The wellbeing benefits of the arts are well understood, particularly in times of distress, and during COVID-19 communal distress has been felt within – and also ameliorated by – the arts community. This online panel convened by Flinders University’s Elise Silson brings together academics, artists and community leaders to explore the tensions at play between art practice, leadership, and the shifting spaces where art is created, performed and experienced.

Panelists and topics:

Dr Tully Barnett (Flinders University) Arts, Value, Culture and Digitisation

Associate Professor Jo Caust  (University of Melbourne) Arts and Leadership Policy

Professor Stephen Muecke (Flinders University) Digital Tech and Indigenous Presence

Dr Sarah Peters (Flinders University) Arts Practice and Facilitation

Music of the ships

Adelaide Baroque is kicking off their 2020 season with Music of the Ships, a physical performance in August that will be delivered within social distancing requirements.

To be introduced by Flinders University’s Dr Gillian Dooley, it will feature Bethany Hill as a special guest soprano.

The encounter between Matthew Flinders and Nicolas Baudin in April 1802 forms the starting point for Music of the Ships, which is a unique journey into the history of South Australia seen through the music of these European explorers.

Works include Peter Sculthorpe’s Sonata for Strings No. 3, with its second movement based on an Aboriginal chant transcribed by a member of the 1802 Baudin exploratory expedition, which was the first known example of music of this kind recorded by Europeans.

The program will include chamber works by Mozart, Haydn, Pleyel, Hoffmeister, Chevalier de Saint-Georges and Sculthorpe; Songs by Haydn, Paisiello and Matthew Flinders himself.

Music of the Ships will be presented on Saturday 22 August at 6:00pm and 8:00pm in the Pilgrim Uniting Church, 12 Flinders Street, Adelaide. Cost is $39 to $49 – find out more or register.
