Social equity lead joins new Lancet commission

Professor Fran Baum

Professor Fran Baum has been appointed to The Lancet’s new Commission on Gender and Global Health. Professor Baum leads Flinders University’s Southgate Institute for Health, Society and Equity.

The Commission draws on the expertise of its independent Commissioners – who range from people working with community health groups, to those working in global governance through to human rights scholars and practitioners. It was established to deliver a program of public engagement to understand the complexity of defining and addressing gender inequities that are driving inequalities in health and wellbeing. The Commission will meet later this year, working to a two-year timeframe to deliver its objectives.

Poche lead contributes to top end tourism strategy

Dr Maree Meredith

Dr Maree Meredith has been appointed to the Northern Territory Aboriginal Tourism Committee. Dr Meredith is aiming to use her expertise to establish an Indigenous arts and health strategy for the NT, a strategy she believes is critical to improving Indigenous health by supporting and building both the economy and culture through the tourism, arts and creative industries.

Dr Meredith has completed extensive research into the link between arts centres and the health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Midwifery students shortlisted for art prize

Two midwifery students have had their artwork shortlisted for the Rosemary Bryant Nursing and Midwifery Art Prize. Zoe Boardman and Alanis Little are finalists for the art prize, which celebrates the 2020 International Year of the Nurse and Midwife. Winners will be announced later in the year.
